Dive Brief:
- PayPal, the digital payments pioneer, put Isabel Cruz, its new chief people officer, at the top of a list of recent hires in a press release issued Wednesday. She starts at the company later this month, on Nov. 27, as PayPal adds several top executives following the appointment of its new CEO, Alex Chriss.
- Also hired was Michelle Gill, an executive vice president who will act as general manager of a new small business and financial services group unit. Gill started Wednesday.
- Heading another new unit will be Diego Scotti, who will join as an executive vice president and general manager leading a consumer and global marketing and communications group, effective Dec. 4.
Dive Insight:
The new management team is being built out after Chriss was appointed in August as the San Jose, California-based company’s leader, effective in September, to succeed long-time CEO Dan Schulman.
Several of the new executives he’s tapping join PayPal from other companies. Cruz was formerly at retail giant Walmart, as a senior vice president and “people leader” for Walmart's global technology, services and corporate teams; Gill was previously senior vice president at Intuit, overseeing the software company’s QuickBooks money platform; and Scotti was formerly the chief marketing officer at clothing retailer J.Crew, with past experience at card issuer American Express.
Chriss was formerly at the software-maker Intuit for most of his career, according to his LinkedIn profile. After starting at the software company in mid-2004 as a manager, he climbed through several other manager positions to an executive vice president role overseeing “an 8,000-person global organization that delivers QuickBooks to over 8 million customers and Mailchimp to 13 million total users around the world,” according to the profile.
Chriss’s past role is in line with his creating the new small business unit at PayPal to be overseen by Gill. PayPal has recently been focused on that client set as a segment that could drive more profitability.
Earlier this month, PayPal named a new CFO, Jamie Miller, who was appointed to take the finance post on Nov. 6. Most recently, Miller held the global CFO post at the accounting and consulting firm EY. Previously, she was CFO of the large agricultural company Cargill, between June 2021 and January 2023, and at the conglomerate General Electric, between October 2017 and February 2020, according to a PayPal press release.
