Dive Brief:
- Fuel retailer Maverik’s locations with diesel now accept Comdata fleet and fuel cards to pay for a fill-up, according to an emailed press release. Comdata is a unit of Atlanta-based fuel card and payments services provider Fleetcor.
- This comes a little under a month after Maverik announced an agreement with TruckSmarter, a trucking technology company, to offer commercial haulers cardless payments and discounts.
- Diesel lanes are currently available at 86 of the convenience retailer’s 400-plus locations across 12 states in the western U.S., according to the release.
Dive Insight:
Maverik, which also has its own fleet card program, is making an expanded play for truckers, broadening its payment options for professional drivers. The retailer could not immediately be reached to comment on whether the fleet cards could be used for more than diesel transactions at its locations.
“At Comdata, we are extremely excited to partner with a historic brand like Maverik,” said Matthew Miller, vice president of merchant services for payments company Fleetcor. Fleetcor acquired Comdata for $3.45 billion in 2014.
Maverik isn’t the only retailer increasingly catering to truck stop users. In addition to known players like Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores and Pilot Co., traditional c-store operators like QuikTrip, Casey’s General Stores and RaceTrac are also expanding their presence in the space.
Additionally, Yesway, Rutter’s and others have also turned their attention toward professional drivers.
Salt Lake City, Utah-based Maverik operates more than 400 convenience stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The retailer is expanding to Montana in 2024, and will have a footprint that includes over 800 locations across the Midwest and Rocky Mountain regions once its acquisition of Kum & Go closes.
