Travelers can pay for hotels on Expedia using bitcoin

Add Expedia to the growing list of large online shopping outlets that are now accepting bitcoin to pay for goods and services.

The travel site Tuesday announced users can use bitcoin to pay for hotel reservations, according to several published reports. Expedia will add Bitcoin acceptance later this year for car rentals and airfare.

"Bitcoin is becoming a viable currency," Michael Gulmann, Expedia's vice president of global product, told CNET. "This is no different from going into any market, understanding how we can do business and offering the forms of payment customers want."

Expedia's bitcoin acceptance comes courtesy of transaction processor Coinbase.

Earlier this month, DISH Network became the largest retailer/services provider to announce Bitcoin support. Up until that point, Overstock.com was the most well-known online storefront to accept the virtual currency.
