The Home Depot and Scanbuy partner on mobile barcode effort

Scanbuy Inc. announced a partnership with The Home Depot to launch a communications strategy using Scanbuy's ScanLife system. The strategy incorporates quick response (QR) codes to provide Home Depot customers with access to a variety of product information and purchase options both in and out of the store right on their smartphones. The QR codes can be read by applications on smartphones and link to things such as product rating and reviews, how-to guides and videos on specific products.

As a part of the promotion, QR codes will be placed in national print ads and on direct mail pieces, as well as being placed on store shelves, signage and other marketing material.

The promotion will allow customers in the store to access product demonstrations and how-to videos as well as an option to purchase the items online. For customers outside the store, an option to purchase the goods online will be enabled by converting any accessed media into a "buy button."

Said Mike Wehrs, CEO and president of Scanbuy, "The Home Depot's decision to bring this service to their millions of customers unquestionably shows how this technology can be extremely powerful for both the consumer and the retailer."

Tom Sweeny, senior director of online strategy for Homedepot.com said, "ScanLife barcodes provide a number of benefits to our customers such as immediate access to our video, product and how-to content and the ability to purchase online from their smartphone. We know our customers are already using their mobile device to assist in the purchasing process, and now Home Depot is embracing this technology to more closely connect our stores and customers to our digital content."
