Square's NYC taxi solution gets a preview
The New York Times "Bits" blog gives a sneak-peek at the in-taxi devices Square is testing in New York City cabs. And like Square's other products, it looks great.
Square is piloting the device in 30 cabs to start. The equipment combines the company's signature credit card acceptance app with an iPad secured to the cab in a black metal case. Riders can swipe their cards to pay, sign with their fingers and receive a receipt via email or mobile phone text. The iPad also displays information to track the cab's location, route and fare.
Megan Quinn, Square’s director of product, told the Times that taxi drivers are some of Square's "most loyal customers." New York cab drivers have been limited in their options due to tight regulations, Quinn told the Times. She said Square started working closely with the New York City Taxi Commission to improve the experience.
Along with providing a simpler setup than the current in-taxi system, Square said it would deposit money in the taxi driver’s bank account the next day instead of the 30 days it currently takes.
And cabbies will be happy to know that Square's system is completely silent, a nice change for drivers who have complained that the current system plays the same audio loop endlessly throughout a shift.
