Square takes its service to Japan
Square is finally making its move overseas. The mobile point of sale provider announced today it will be available in Japan. Square said it will be working with Sumitomo Mitsui Card Corporation to introduce its Square Register into Japan.
The Japanese service is the same as that available in the U.S. With the Square dongle and app, merchants can turn their smartphones into card processing terminals. Costs are slightly higher in Japan; merchants are charged 3.25 per swiped transaction. Funds are deposited into merchant accounts the next business day.
"I am honored to introduce Square to a country with a rich history of design, innovation and tradition. Square shares the same values and attention to detail in our products. Our tools are made to enable business owners to create a delightful, seamless experience for their customers," said Jack Dorsey, Square's CEO and cofounder. "I look forward to Square assisting in Japan’s continued economic growth and entrepreneurship opportunities."
