Square eyes QSRs with new Register features
Square is expanding its Square Register point-of-sale tool to make it more competitive in the quick serve restaurant space. The company has announced new features that include the ability to enter custom orders as well as attach a customer name or number to an order.
In announcing the new features, Square said Register will allow restaurants to increase accuracy, decrease wait times and better serve customers.
"In an industry where speed, accuracy, and a great customer experience are essential to success, Square Register gives quick serve restaurants tools that are powerful, intuitive, and affordable," said company co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey in the announcement. "Square is focused on connecting businesses with customers and now, more than ever, merchants can concentrate on providing great food for their customers."
The new upgrades to the Register product mean that Square is clearly looking beyond the small merchants it built its reputation on. That's a bold move for Square, which has previously competed with startups like GoPago and Revel Systems for business from mom-and-pop stores. By attracting larger customers with a full-service product — one that does more than processes payments —Square will be competing with giants like NCR and MICROS.
"With this, you're now dealing with one complete system," said Dorsey in an interview with Mobile Payments Today sister site, QSRWeb.
"You're not messing with a bunch of systems. Many QSRs have three or four systems in their operations, one for credit card processing, kitchen ticket printing, cash register, other devices. This is just one device that pulls it all together," he said.
