Payment Data Systems to enter mobile POS market ... soon

The "mobile payments is all hype" crowd may be on to something. Apparently, it's no longer even necessary to build a mobile payment application before putting out an announcement about it.

Payment Data Systems Inc., a San Antonio-based payment company, announced today it will develop an application that can process payments wirelessly from mobile devices. The application will be called iRemotePay and sounds suspiciously like similar mobile POS solutions from Square or Intuit and even comes with a card reader device.

Payment Data Systems said its product will differ from other mobile POS products in that it is aimed at merchants with multiple POS devices in the field, will allow ACH payments, and is processor agnostic. (That last one is important since it means companies with existing merchant accounts can use the application without having to sign a new merchant service agreement.)

The iRemotePay application will initially be available for iOS devices with an Android version coming sometime later. However, no date for the release of either version was given in the release, only that the iPhone application "is expected to be available in the 4th Quarter 2011."
