MoneyGram, Lebara sign agreement on mobile money transfers

Money transfer service MoneyGram has signed an agreement with European carrier Lebara Mobile. Through the partnership, Lebara's U.K. subscribers can send money from the Lebara Money app on an iOS or Android device to MoneyGram locations worldwide.

Lebara subscribers in Spain, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland will have access to the service soon.

"We're excited about the opportunity to provide our European customers with easily accessible transfer services though Lebara's smart phone apps," said Carl Scheible, executive vice president for Europe, Africa and emerging channels at MoneyGram. "Our agreement gets us yet another step closer to our goal of linking with fast and reliable mobile and web services that give our customers even more flexibility when sending money to loved ones nearby or overseas."

Lebara provides low-cost, prepaid mobile services in seven European nations and Australia. It launched its Lebara Money service in March 2011, offering users a prepaid MasterCard account.
