Leaf's new tablet-based POS includes EMV, NFC

Leaf has unveiled an updated version of its LeafPresenter tablet that makes it even easier for local merchants to run and grow their business, according a company press release. Out of the box, the LeafPresenter provides small and medium-sized businesses with a feature-rich mobile ordering and checkout device capable of accepting payments through their choice of processor or via next-generation payment methods such as PayPal, LevelUp and other mobile wallets.

Version 2 of the LeafPresenter introduces numerous hardware enhancements including an improved camera capable of reading 1D and 2D barcodes, a second camera on the front of the tablet, an HD-quality display and a more efficient battery that charges faster and stays charged longer, said Aron Schwarzkopf, CEO of Leaf. All of these enhancements are built into a smaller, lighter and more rugged tablet.

In addition, the Leaf tablet uses an updated version of the Leaf OS, a custom operating system designed for payment security, speed and usability.

"Leaf is on a mission to turn standard point of sale into point of smart interactions for small businesses, so it's important that we stay on the cutting edge of technology," said Schwarzkopf. "Cameras on phones and tablets have been used in niche cases for payment and loyalty, but I'm sure we haven't even scratched the surface of how tablet hardware can improve the customer experience."

Schwarzkopf said that Leaf wants to enable creative developers with all the tools they need to come up with game-changing ideas, and that combining secure payment technology with the latest hardware and internet connectivity in the LeafPresenter creates limitless possibilities for them.

The new LeafPresenter also includes support for NFC, EMV and gift cards as standard features, supporting what the company calls its open approach to payment acceptance. Third-party developers can use the Leaf platform and OS to create their own apps available through the Leaf Appstore, an application market designed specifically for small businesses.

The cost of the LeafPresenter is $50 per month and includes access to LeafBusiness, the company's online business management and analytics tool.

Version 2 of LeafPresenter will be available this summer.
