IBM launches improved self-checkout system

IBM has launched a checkout solution allowing retailers to provide customers with third-party products and services at checkout.

Smarter Checkout combines IBM's systems, software and services to allow retailers to analyze consumer data and employ real-time basket analytics to offer them new products or services at the POS, according to an IBM press release.

By plugging in real-time basket analytics, a retailer can now offer real-time promotions and relevant offers while the customer is passing through the checkout lane. For example, as a purchase is scanned, new products or services will appear on cashier and customer-facing touchscreens, essentially making the traditional point-of-sale station a true point-of-service, and helping make shopping faster, easier and smarter, the release stated.

Along with an enhanced consumer shopping experience and improved operational efficiency, Smarter Checkout enables more seamless cross-channel integration, giving consumers access to products available both online and in the store

The solution also allows customers to use their mobile devices to process orders, redeem digital coupons, access loyalty points, and pay for purchases at IBM kiosks.
