Hackers hit US Treasury, Commerce departments

The U.S. Treasury and Commerce departments were hacked as part of a global cyber espionage campaign that has gone on for approximately a month.

In response, the Department of Homeland Security and National Security Council are calling on federal civilian agencies to review networks for a possible data breach, according a AP News report.

The hacking incidents come less than a week after cybersecurity agency FireEye reported foreign government hackers breached its network and stole hacking tools. No group has been held responsible asyet, but there has been some indication Russia may be involved due to clues found within the server. Russia has denied any involvement.

In all three incidents the hackers used a software server known as SolarWinds, which is used by hundreds of thousands of organizations around the world, including U.S. federal agencies.
