Foursquare teams with Visa, MasterCard on card-user discount program

Foursquare has announced the expansion of its Foursquare Specials for Credit Cards program to accept Visa, MasterCard and most debit cards.

The new offering follows the same model as an existing arrangement between Foursquare and American Express: Consumers sync their credit cards with Foursquare and then receive discounts when they use a synced card to make a purchase at a participating establishment where they've checked in with Foursquare. The discount appears as a credit on the cardholder's monthly statement

According to a report by Ad Age, current participating retailers in the program have included Dunkin' Donuts, Nike, Sports Authority and Whole Foods.

While the initial deal with AmEx was all about marketing exposure, Foursquare is now getting revenue out of that discount program, and will also earn a cut from the Visa and MasterCard deals.

No surprise, then, that Foursquare is also placing offers more prominently in its app. The Ad Age report said that user profiles will now show cards synced and savings earned over time.

The technology behind the new Foursquare program is provided by FirstData and CardSpring. The program uses the FirstData OfferWise open platform solution.
