First Data to power Mahala m-payments app

First Data, a global provider of electronic commerce and payment processing, will power credit card transactions for Mahala, a secure mobile payments app for merchants, content owners and nonprofits, according to an announcement from the companies.

The resulting partnership should help Mahala scale its mobile payments technology globally, the companies said.

"We're excited to bring our product to market with First Data," Mahala CEO Sonny Fisher said in the announcement. "First Data is unmatched in terms of sheer processing capabilities as well as security. By partnering with their amazing team, we immediately gain a global partner that can effectively support our growing international client base."

On June 10, Mahala will launch a limited-availability beta version of its mobile payments app with select partners on the Android operating system. With the app, consumers can scan the company's secure QR codes with their phones to complete transactions. The S-QR enables payments anywhere, including social media sites, without forcing consumers to go to another site to pay.

As Mahala users scan sellers' S-QR codes, bank account information is not stored at the point of purchase, Mahala said.

Mahala is finalizing a list of beta users, including musicians, retail outlets, online retailers and nonprofits, for a wider-release iPhone launch in late June.
