Elavon brings chip and PIN-enabled mobile POS to UK

U.S. Bancorp's payment processing subsidiary Elavon is joining the mobile POS market in the U.K. with the introduction of its Elavon MobileMerchant payment solution. Like other mobile POS products, the new solution from Elavon caters to small businesses and turns mobile devices into payment terminals. For the U.K. market, MobileMerchant also includes a Bluetooth-enabled reader to process chip and PIN cards.

"Elavon has responded to the call for innovation by delivering a convenient and secure solution that makes payment processing accessible to a new class of customers,” said Simon Haslam, president of International Markets at Elavon, in a statement.

Haslam said the company's goal is to make payment acceptance easy for all businesses, regardless of type, size or acceptance environment.

Along with processing payments, the company said the MobileMerchant solution fully encrypts card data and meets all U.K. banking requirements to protect customers and merchants from credit card fraud and chargebacks. Additionally, the new solution produces electronic receipts that can be sent to customers via email or text.

Elavon said the solution is currently in a pilot phase but will be have a wider rollout starting in March 2012.
