DoorDash, Grubhub, Uber Eats in tight food delivery competition

The restaurant food delivery business is a wide open competition, with more than half of consumers that use these services using multiple apps at the same time, according to a Consumer Intelligence Research Partners report.

Among consumers that have used a restaurant delivery service in the past 90 days, more than half have DoorDash, UberEats and GrubHub apps and 26% of those also have Postmates.

"Consumers both have and use multiple apps, with no single one among the top three dominating," Josh Lowitz, co-founder and partner at CIRP, said in the report.

The report reveals that among consumers that use delivery apps, DoorDash has 34% market share, followed by Uber Eats at 30%, GrubHub at 24% and Postmates at 10%.

On average, consumers downloaded 1.9 apps, therefore half of consumers have either DoorDash, UberEats or Grubhub. In terms of actual use, delivery customers have used an average of 1.8 apps in the past 90 days, with one-third using DoorDash or UberEats and one-quarter using Grubhub.

About 72% of the restaurants used on restaurant apps are national or regional chains, while 38% are independent restaurants. For both categories, more than half of all consumers choose a restaurant first and then choose an app to order the delivery.

The research was based on a survey of 1,000 consumers that used an app-based restaurant delivery service between July and December 2019.
