Amex, foursquare take check-in discounts to the UK
American Express is extending its discount partnership with location-based social network foursquare. Now Amex Cardmembers in the U.K. will have access to the program.
To receive discounts, American Express cardholders sync their accounts with foursquare to gain access to discounts any time they check-in through foursquare at a participating merchant. They will be given an option to load a discount to their cards. When they use their Amex to pay, the discounts are deducted automatically from their monthly statements. Customers must present a voucher or coupon for merchants to change anything at the point of sale. (A short video explaining the program is below.)
"This partnership with foursquare is a first for our U.K. cardmembers at a time when value-driven Brits are becoming increasingly tech savvy," said Julie Hay, head of credit cards at American Express. "It's a perfect way to get hassle-free discounts."
Amex and foursquare have been partners on the discount program in the U.S. since early last year. The companies piloted the service at the SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas, in March and then rolled it out nationwide in June 2011.
